~Library~

So I still have never stepped foot inside any library on campus.

I'm a weirdo and I don't ever go places by myself for the first time. I always like to have a buddy with me. Luckily, I haven't really needed to go to the library yet. Hopefully when I finally do need to go to the library I'll have someone to go with me.

I always just study in my room, the study room in my dorm, or in the laundry room in my dorn (sounds weird, right?). I LOVE studying in the laudry room because it's always quiet and warm. I'm CONSTANTLY cold and LOVE being in the laudry room where it's nice and warm.

I like to be comfortable when I study, which is probably a bad thing because I usually end up falling asleep, but that's why I usually just study in my room.

I think I'm the only person I know that hasn't been to one of the libraries on campus at some point or another.

Too Far Away.

I wish all of the important places on campus weren't so far away from Ridgecrest (where I live).

Getting to the Rec Center is such a hassle. I got to the point where I was going like almost every day, but then I got really lazy and I hate driving all the way over there. Also, it sucks that you can't park there until after like 5 or 6. It's way too crowded from like 6 to 9 so I always end up going at like 10:30, which is entirely too late. I feel so unsafe walking back to my dorm at like midnight by myself.

Also, getting to the student health center is a hassle. I've only been there once because I hated driving all the way over there, just to have to wait for like 2 hours.

A HUGE problem of mine is making it over to the Alpha Gam house. I usually just go when it's required. I'm SO lazy and I hate having to walk all the way over there because there is nowhere to park during the day. My parents are constantly getting on to me for spending money on food when I can just eat at the house for free.

Local Food: Pop's Garden & Montye's Farm

I went home this weekend for my cousin Shelby's birthday party. My family went to my lakehouse on Saturday and we had a home-cooked meal for lunch. The meal consisted of steaks, which came from my cousin's farm, corn, which also came from her farm, salad with tomatoes from my grandfather's garden, green beans from my grandfather's garden, and squash caserole, which was made with squash from my grandfather's garden.

Canned green beans are nothing compared to my grandfather's green beans. Fresh green beans from my grandfather's garden have so much more flavor than any other green beans I've ever tasted.

Although I'm not a tomato fan, I actually liked the tomatoes from my grandfather's garden.

The steaks had so much more flavor and were so much more tender than steaks from grocery stores.

It's amazing how much better local food tastes than food from a grocery store.

"Into the Woods"

So I went to see the play "Into the Woods" last week and it was awesome! I love the UA plays. They're all so different, which is good since I have to go to so many for my classes, but I've really enjoyed all of them.

"Into the Woods" was basically s combination of a bunch of traditional fairytales: Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunsle. It was pretty neat. It was extremely comical, but also had a great message. The "evil" characters were punished in the end and the "good" characters were rewarded and lived happily ever after, so to speak.

Although I'm not really not into theater all that much, I always really enjoy the UA plays.

I have no idea why I haven't posted on this yet. It's so obviously one of the most local things I've done this year.

Ok, so last semester I took UH210, which is a Unversity Honors class, entitled Arts of Tuscaloosa. In that class I had to go to all of these "arts events" including" dance, theater, museums, creative campus speakers, and music concerts. I had to go to two events a week and write a 1 page paper on each event, which was a total and complete pain. And now this semester I'm taking FA200. In that class I have to go to one event a week and write a 3 page paper on each, which is also a pretty big pain.
But, now that I think about it, all of the events available to students on campus are actually very interesting.

No matter what background/lifestyle/ideas a student comes from and supports, there's something on campus for almost everyone.

Dance Alabama! and ARDT (Alabama Reparatory Dance Theater) both contained a multitude of performances. Each recital included: ballet, Pointe, jazz, and alternative performances, which catered to a very diverse audience.

The art exhibits and museums I went to also catered to a diverse audience. There were paintings including: landscapes, abstract art, and portraits. There was also a plethera of pottery. Other art forms present at these exhibits included: sketches, hand puppets, sculptures, and mixed media. While I'm not very interested in the sculptures or mixed media, the sketches and paintings are pretty cool. (I used to take art classes and I LOVE drawing).

Also, the plays I've gone to have all been really diverse. They were: comical, romantic, serious, mournful, adventurous, mysterious, and even scary. They were all extremely interesting and I think it's really cool that all of the plays were so different that, no matter who you are, you could enjoy atleast one.

The one thing I was not a HUGE fan of (sorry Molly and Ellen) were the music concerts. And the only reason for this is that I took piano lessons for about 5 years and I played the flute for 7 years and I am completely burned out on musical performances. But, there were a lot of different types of performances includong: solo recitals, ohestra performances, strings performances, sectional performances, and jazz performances. So, again, there were a variety of performances for people interested in all types of music.

Football Tickets

I think the football ticket situation at Alabama is absolutly awful. I've heard of many students, seniors included, that were not able to buy tickets before they ran out. It's ridiculous the EXTREMELY small amount of tickets that are allotted to students. Students are some of the most involved people in the University activities. They dedicate time and effort to school, extracirricular activities, and other University programs, and they should expect the same loyalty awarded to them by the school.

Also, my dad has been working for the University for almost 30 years, and each year the location of our family's season tickets get worse and worse. After all the time my dad has dedicated to the University, it's unacceptable that the University disregard that, all for those Tide Pride fans and others who are willing to pay more money.

The University shuns its most dedicated and important fans because money is more important to them than loyalty.

Ferg Parking Deck

So the whole Ferg Parking Deck situation is driving me crazy. I don't know how many of y'all have to park there, but I, personally, think it's totally ridiculous that there's no pedestrian entrance on the dorm side of the parking deck. The only pedestrian entrance in the parking deck is on the other side, across the street from the Ferg.

So, for those of you that don't live around here, there was this one area where students could enter the parking deck on the dorm side; however, apparently the University didn't like students climbing through that tiny hole, so they put up bars to prevent that, while all of the students were away for Christmas Break. Less than a week later, the bars had been bent so students could fit through. Then someone eventually removed a couple of those bars to make access easier. So it remained that way for a couple of months and then about two weeks ago they decided to replace the bars and put up a chain-link fense behind it. Well, that didn't last long either... like two days later some went and removed two of the bars and actually cut away and bend back the fense.

It should be OBVIOUS that a pedestrian entrance is needed on that side of the parking deck. I don't understand why the University refuses to create an entrance and insists on continuing to try to prevent students from entering on that side. No attempt has worked and it's pretty obvious how desperate students are to enter there. It would be much easier if they just gave in and actually created an entrance, rather than continuing their efforts which, thus far, have amounted to the effectiveness of leaving footprints in the sand, only to have them washed away almost immediately.

Greek Week

So I've been going to the Greek Week events and my favorite event so far was the Greek Olympics. It was great to see all of the paired sororities and fraternities working together and having fun.

I also think that it's pretty awesome that all of the fraternities, including the multi-cultural frats and sororities were involved in all of the Greek Week events.

Alpha Gam won the Greek Olympics, which was awesome and tons of fun to watch.

I didn't, however, like the auction. I hate the idea of girls being auctioned off like objects. I understand it was for a good cause, but it just seems kind of demoralizing to me. But, it was still fun and entertaining.

The only bad thing about the Greek Week events, in my opinion, is the competition created, especially between the sororities. My twin sister is in a different sorority than me and I know she's getting extremely competative.

Relay for Life

I raised money for Relay for Life last Friday. Relay for Life is a fund raiser for cancer research. I was surprised at how many people went to the actual relay. All races and ages of people were at the event. The relay took place at a local high school (I can't remember which one now).

I really enjoyed being there. I went with my sorority, Alpha Gam, and we had a beach-themed tent. All of the children gravitated toward our tent because of the gigantic beach ball and blow-up fish. I really enjoyed playing with all of the children.

This event was especially important to me because of my grandfather who died suddenly, less than a year ago from cancer. The march of the survivors around the track was very moving, as were the laps made by loved ones of those who have died from cancer.

So I went home this weekend and had dinner with my whole family one night.  They cooked steaks, one of my personal favorites.  The meat came from my cousin, Montye, and her husband's farm.  It would be kind of weird to me, eating something that I had raised, but Montye said that's just kinda how it goes.  They make a ton off of their meat and that's pretty much what all of their cows are for.  She said the first couple of times it really bothered her, but after 8 years she's kind of used to it.

I was sitting around in my dorm tonight, listening to my roommates talk to some of their friends about their majors.  One of my roommates is a bio/pre med. major, but she's really not enjoying it and doesn't really want to follow through with it anymore.  I went to high school with her and know she's always been a HUGE over achiever, which i guess could be a good thing in many ways, but she also is WAY too worried with what people think about her.  Her parents are also kind of like that.  They want her to be a doctor or a lawyer or something equally as productive and "important."  She's really hesitant about changing her major because she knows a bio major makes her seem extremely smart and successful, and because she doesn't want to change to something that won't make hr as much money.  I think that's totally ridiculous, especially since she's not enjoying her classes at all.

Ok, so I finally found a house to live in next year, right off campus. It's totally random. I'm living with my twin sister (who sin't exactly my best friend), a girl i used to hang out with, and another girl I went to highschool with but never really hung out with.

But I'm totally excited because now I can get a dog... and I've found the PERFECT one. It's a weimeraner/lab mix and has a brother that my boyfriend wants to get. They are ADORABLE.

Anyway, enough about dogs, because that appears to be the topic of most of my posts so far.

I registered for classes today and I HATE UH (University Honors) classes. They always get filled up SO far and I can't ever get into the one I want. I also hate how I always have the perfect schedule figured out and EVERY time one of my classes gets changed to the WORST possible time.

SICK! SICK! SICK!

I'm so tired of being sick!! I was sick twice last semester and I've been sick pretty much all of this semester, too. I've always heard that freshmen usually get sick a lot because they're being exposed--for the first time--to SO MANY sick people, but I figured that wouldn't really apply to me because I rarely get sick.

Well, apparently I was wrong, and it sucks. It really freaks me out when people sitting behind me in class cough ALL OVER me! Ew. I understand that they're bing responsible and going to class, despite their sicknesses, but it's totally not necessary to cough all over everyone. Cover your mouth! And I'm tired of having to give people cough drops during class. Apparently no one--except me--is capable of buying their own cough drops. I don't mind giving them out, but it's pretty ridiculous having to give them to the same people day-after-day. I mean, if you're going to be coughing uncontrolably during class, but cough drops or something.

And I can't find ANY medicine that works. I even took a prescription for my bronchitis a couple of weeks ago and I have bronchitis again, less than two weeks later. This is getting pretty exhausting and ridiculous, especially since it's totally messing up my work-out routine to get ready for summer.

Hey, so y'all should definitely watch this VIDEO!! One of the guys is my boyfriend and the other guy is his step brother.  They live together in Auburn and this is what happened one morning at like 2 a.m. when they were trying to study.  Needless to say, my boyfriend just got diagnosed with ADD...

... couldn't figure out how to get the actual video on here, so you'll have to click on the link.
Has anyone noticed that there are dogs ALL OVER the quad now that it's warmed up a lot? I am totally obsessed with dogs and I want one SO bad, but I can't find anywhere to live around campus where I can keep a dog.  I've been looking all over the internet for the past few months trying to find apartments anywhere around campus that allow dogs over 20lbs and I haven't been able to find any within like 10 minutes of campus. I mean, where do all these people live with all these big dogs??? I know there are also a lot of houses right around campus, but I've heard of people that live in apartments with dogs, I just can't ever find out which apartments they live in.  And even some of the houses around campus don't allow dogs.  The whole finding somewhere to live on or around campus, not in a dorm, just infuriates me.  It's so hard to find anything online or anywhere else.  Real estate agencies definitely need to figure out a better method of advertising their properties around Tuscaloosa.

So I went to Dreamland tonight and I was totally unimpressed. I had heard so may good things about it and I just did not find it to be that great at all. I usually love BBQ, but i barely ate any of it. I just thought that, after everything I've heard about how great it is, I just didn't find it all that appealing. So my favorite place to eat around here is still definately Newk's.

Also, I've been going to the Rec. every night lately and tonight, while running around the track, I noticed that the people playing bball, soccer, and volley ball in the gym bellow the track are really segregated. All the black people play bball on one side and all the white people play either bball or volley ball on the other side. I dunno, I guess people usually have more friends that are the same race, but I think it's stupid.

I am totally obsessed with dogs and would do ANYTHING to be able to have a big dog down here. Unfortunately, I cannot find an apartment close enough to campus that will let me have a dog (or one big enough to even be considered a dog). Today while I was walking around on the quad I saw 6 labs and a weimeraner. It was awesome. I totally want a yellow lab, but I guess I'll have to wait another year.

I am totally unadventerous and only ever go to Newk's when I eat out in Tuscaloosa. And every time I go to Newk's, I get a chicken salad sandwhich, plain potato chips, and a Dr. Pepper. But, I'm hoping I'm going to start branching out soon and maybe find somewhere else that I like.

I'm in a Supper Club, which means my family and 5 other families from my hometown cook out or go out to eat once a month. Since 7 out of the 11 kids in my Supper Club go to Alabama, we've decided to have our own Supper Club and go to different restaurants in Tuscaloosa once a month.

Last month we went to Cyprus Inn, which I had been to before and absolutely love. And this month we're going to Dreamland. I've never been a huge fan of bbq, so this could be interesting.

Last month when we were eating at Cyprus Inn, we were discussing possible places we could go over the next few months. I hadn't heard of most. So i'm actually getting pretty excited. I'm a HUGE fan of food!

Only 5 of the 7 people made it to Cyprus Inn last month. My sister was doing sorority things, another girl was sick and I had sorority stuff to do so I was only able to stay for around 30 minutes. It's going to be pretty impossible to get everyone together with the insanely busy lives of college students, but we'll see what happens.
